JOSIAH
âDANNY! CâMON, MATE. Talk to me.â I followed him into the rear of the flat, passing another seating area. Past that, two small bedrooms stood off to the left while another, longer hallway led to a master bedroom. Thatâs where I found him, pouting on the end of his bed.
He glared at me, his gaze glacial. âWhat else is there to say?â
âI donât know.â I spread my arms and shrugged. âExplain it to me. Why the fuck would you want to be the Devil? Why New York? Why any of this?â
He laughed, but his eyes sparkled with the promise of tears. âOf course you wouldnât understand. Not you. It was always so easy for you, wasnât it? The power. You know, I remember the day Christian brought you back. You were a skinny, dirty kid with a dream and barely two dimes to rub together. You knew a handful of tricks, but we all knew you had promise. A year later, you rivaled Christian in raw power while I hit a plateau.â
âI know it looks like I had it easy, Danny, but I promise you I paid for it.â
âYou lost Evette!â he shouted. âOne person! I lost everything!â
Evette. That was a name I hadnât uttered since that day. Since the day Christian sliced her open and let her bleed out while she cried for me to save her. I shook the memory away. Danny wasnât going to listen to reason, but maybe I could appeal to his emotion.
I sighed and sat down on the end of the bed next to him. âIt wasnât fair what happened to you. If you want to hurt me, then hurt me. Itâs got nothing to do with all these people. These ten million idiots are nothing to you.â
He chuckled and shook his head. âTheyâre a means to an end. It doesnât have to be New York. It could be Seattle. Chicago. Los Angles. Theyâre just cities, and cities rise and fall. Whatâs one wrecked city in the grand scheme of things?â
A chill slithered down my spine at the casual way he mentioned murdering millions.
Danny looked away, focusing on the fire escapes winding down the next building. âYou want to know why I want to be the Devil? Why not? What else am I supposed to be?â
âAnything you want, Danny. Youâre a free man now. Do what you like.â
He swallowed, his throat working with the weight of what Iâd said. âThing is, I have. Iâve done a lot since then. When I heard the news about Christian, I thought everyone was dead. I wanted to die too. I was tired. Tired of being used, lied to, tired of trading blow jobs in back alleys for food, of sleeping in tents and thinking that was all there ever was. I was tired of being powerless.â
I put a hand on his back and leaned forward. âBut youâre not. Look at what youâve done with yourself. Youâve got your own bloody company. Youâre a millionaire, Danny-Boy.â
He stood and went to the window, leaning his forehead against it.
